━◦ about us ◦━

Welcome to Sunnycroft! Relax and explore in our garden or discover the stories which lie within this beautiful time capsule. Sunnycroft was built in 1880, and extended in 1899. Uniquely the house remained in the same family from its completion in 1899, until it was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1997. The house is packed full with everyday items belonging to the families who lived here, The grounds are a mini estate with pigsties, stables, kitchen garden, orchards, conservatory, flower garden and superb Wellingtonia avenue. Enjoy a refreshments in the period tea-room.

The first thing you notice about Sunnycroft is not the house, but the long line of tall wellingtonia trees that line the curving drive. To the far side of the house are the wonderful listed greenhouses. By far the most impressive room in the house was the staircase hall, carpeted in lush red, with wonderfully carved staircase newels and bannisters rising up to a glassed cupola high above. Other highlights include gorgeous light fittings throughout the house, some in rococo style. The house was fitted with an early form of central heating, with extravagantly ornate radiators in most rooms.

Sunnycroft's conservatory is no ordinary conservatory. Embellished with stained glass, decorative finials and ironwork, we think only two examples of Halliday glasshouses, which makes this one even more special.

Do you keep a scrap book? A book of souvenirs and keepsakes from a special holiday or your time at school? We've been exploring the collections at Sunnycroft and discovering scrap books from the past. We have lots of scrap books in the Sunnycroft on display so you'll be able to see them for yourself.

For years the families at Sunnycroft have played tennis and had garden parties on the main lawn. Now you too can have a go at croquet, skittles or badminton; weather permitting, the main lawn is a lovely place to set up for a picnic.

Follow the Wellingtonia Avenue of trees into five acres of garden, from formal borders to the vegetable plot. You can even take a tour with a volunteer guide who will walk you through the history and restoration of the mini estate.

The five acre garden today is half of its original size yet it retains all of the key of a Victorian garden and grounds such as a paddock, orchard, and formal rose garden, a coach house and stables, kennels, glasshouses and an impressive conservatory as well as herbaceous borders. While you are here you can challenge friends and family to a game of croquet on the lawn, or why not try other favourite Victorian pastimes of quoits or skittles. The lawn is a great place to set up a picnic and while away an afternoon.

Sunnycroft Virtual Tour

In 2018, Sunnycroft was lucky enough to be chosen to be part of the Telford 50 year anniversary celebrations. The celebrations included the '50 Buildings Project' which recorded 50 special Telford buildings in 3D, that were made into virtual tours. There is now a virtual online library of some of the most important buildings in the area. The virtual tours will remain as an online resource for residents, schools, visitors and community organisations. Feel free to try it out and explore.
